Indonesian men’s singles player Anthony Sinisuka Ginting advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2024 China Open. Ginting beat home favorite Shi Yu Qi.
In the last 16 match which took place at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Changzhou, Thursday (19/9), Ginting beat Shi Yu Qi who had the status of first seed with two games 21-11, 21-8.
“There’s not much to tell from today’s match because we can see Shi Yuqi didn’t play as usual from start to finish. But I stayed focused and didn’t let my guard down in executing the pattern that had been prepared,” Ginting said after the match.
Shi Yu Qi was suspected of being in poor condition. After the match, Ginting asked and Sho Yu Qi said that he was indeed not in good condition.
The victory is a capital for the Indonesian men’s singles. Moreover, other favorites such as Viktor Axelsen have also been eliminated.
Second seed Axelsen lost in the first round to unseeded home badminton player Lie Lan Xi in the last 32.
“Several top seeds have stopped, including Viktor (Axelsen) and Shi Yu Qi, but I don’t want to think too far ahead, I’ll stay focused on one match at a time,” said Ginting.
“Anything can happen especially with the condition of the field like this. Badminton as a sport must have winners or losers,” he said. (Z-6)
