BEIJING (AP) — The death toll from a mudslide triggered by downpours outside the western Chinese city of Xi’an rose to 21 on Sunday and rescuers were still searching for six missing, according to the government.
The mudslide and flash flood on Friday followingnoon also damaged a highway and knocked out power to 900 households, according to the social media account of the Xi’an Emergency Management Office. A total of 980 people with dogs were working to search for those who were still missing.
Parts of China experience downpours and floods every summer, but this year has been unusually harsh in some areas, while others suffered from crop-damaging droughts. The government had previously reported 142 deaths from floods and landslides in July.
