It’s not yet the end of the bottleneck, but Beijing has loosened its grip on the Chinese video game industry over the past year. In 2023, the Chinese regulatory authority responsible for the sector – the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) – has given the green light to the launch of 1,076 titles, according to the count from the daily “South China Morning Post” . A level much higher than in 2022 (512) and 2021 (748), but still light years away from the record for 2017. That year, nearly 9,000 productions were released.

The fact remains that in the month of December alone, 107 video games received approval from the Chinese authorities. This is the highest volume in the last seventeen months. A welcome breath of fresh air for many Chinese video game publishers and developers, who have suffered the full brunt of the Chinese government’s tightening of the screws in recent years.
