The Chinese government has expanded credit lines to finance the development of 5 nanometer chips. According to information shared this week, the main beneficiaries of this measure have been Huawei and SMIC.

For market analysts, this injection of capital into companies is something designed to help the country circumvent United States sanctions, with the main objective being self-sufficiency.

A report published this week shows that even some cities in China have helped finance semiconductor projects with subsidies and other financial aid. It’s as if the entire country was involved in this “mission”.

To date, SMIC has received 1.95 billion yuan and Huawei has raised US$30 billion.

This high investment from China has begun to “bear the first fruits” and a clear example of this is that SMIC is preparing for mass production of 5 nm chips in Shanghai.

The manufacturer has already opened two units responsible for assembling the chips and everything indicates that the first units should be released in the second half of this year.

Huawei has dedicated itself to designing chips not only for smartphones, but also for the 6G network, IOT and Artificial Intelligence processing.

Huawei is considering recruiting 35,000 researchers by June 2024, which might contribute to an acceleration in the development of 5nm chips.

For now, the companies mentioned do not comment on the matter.
