The epidemic in Hong Kong has not eased in recent days. Wearing masks has gradually become a living habit of the public to avoid contracting the virus. However, China has recently developed a new mask that allows users to detect whether there is COVID-19 or the flu around them when wearing them.
According to Bloomberg, a team of 6 scientists from Tongji University in Shanghai successfully developed a sensor mounted on a mask that can detect whether the air near the wearer contains COVID-19, H5N1 (type A bird flu) within 10 minutes. ), the causative agent of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, and transmit the results to the device.
The American scientific journal “Matter” article pointed out that the sensor carries nucleic acid aptamers, which can recognize the unique proteins of pathogens. The team installed a multi-channel sensor with three nucleic acid aptamers in the mask, enabling it to recognize COVID-19, H5N1 and H1N1 at the same time.
This sensor can be recharged with a lithium battery, and users only need to install the sensor outside the mask to use it. The team conducted a pathogen spray test for the sensor indoors, simulating someone spraying the pathogen while talking or coughing. It was found that the sensor can detect a liquid response that is regarding 70-560 times lower than that of a sneeze, and both will send a warning to the device.
