China confirms that iPhones 15 can be sold in the country

Recently, the Chinese government banned the use of iPhones by public employees, in addition to expanding the measure to state-owned companies and other government organizations. A government spokesperson had also given a rather vague statement about the need for products sold in the country to comply with national laws, sparking even more speculation about possible new bans.

Today, however, Mao Ningspokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave clarification about this issue. At a press conference, he stated that the country “has not issued laws, regulations or documents that prohibit the acquisition or use of foreign brand phones, such as those from Apple”. The iPhones 15, therefore, can be sold in China without any problems.

Ning, however, added information, perhaps to justify the previous bans. The spokesperson said that he has noticed media attention regarding security incidents involving iPhones and that the Chinese government attaches great importance to cybersecurity. He also added that foreign and national companies are treated equally there.

Therefore, according to what was said by the spokesperson, it is necessary for companies to act in compliance with Chinese laws and strengthen the management of security information. In any case, there is no ban on the general sale of iPhones and other devices from foreign brands in China, just with an emphasis on this issue of security.

This situation, however, is far from being an isolated case, relating to a movement to reduce vulnerabilities in China and also to reduce dependence on the Asian country on the part of American companies, such as Apple. Even though Apple has the nation as its largest market, the company has been trying to diversify device production locations, in order to reduce the preponderance of Chinese suppliers in this regard.

Furthermore, even though the iPhones 15 are normally sold in China, it is undeniable that allegations such as those about supposed security incidents generate at least some doubts among consumers and the market. Therefore, these statements may still have some impact on the company’s position in the Chinese market and in general.
