China on Wednesday castigated American sanctions once morest a Chinese network of drug producers, in particular fentanyl, an opiate responsible for tens of thousands of overdoses in the United States each year.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate, used in the medical field but which can be misused as a drug.
These sanctions concern 28 people and entities, notably in China, but also in Canada, and who are now prohibited from accessing the American financial market.
China said it was “firmly opposed” to these sanctions in a press release sent to AFP.
“The fentanyl crisis in the United States is rooted in the country itself,” said the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, specifying that it had sent a “solemn” protest.
The subject of opiates is one of the many areas of tension between Washington and Beijing. It was notably discussed by the Minister of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, during her visit to China at the end of August.
The fight once morest fentanyl is among the priorities of the White House. This powerful synthetic opioid is up to 50 times more potent than heroin.
The Biden administration announced at the end of August more than $450 million in additional funding to fight the overdose crisis in the United States.
