Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the current war in the Middle East shows the United States’ double standards on human rights issues.
“If the United States cares so much about the human rights of Muslims, why does it continue to provoke or support wars in the Middle East and other regions, resulting in many innocent Muslim victims?” he said, reported by Anadolu, Friday (27/9).
Wang asked this question to UN Human Rights Head Volker Turk during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Wednesday (25/9). The diplomat, who was born on October 19 1953, questioned the reasons why the US turns a blind eye to the historical injustices faced by the Arab community and does not support Palestine to become a full member of the UN.
According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, Wang Yi also questioned why Washington did not play its due role in achieving a permanent ceasefire and complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Wang believes that political manipulation of human rights issues by countries like America is becoming increasingly unpopular throughout the world.
Regarding China’s northwestern Xinjiang Province, he claimed issues relating to Uyghurs in the region were being used to attack and smear China’s human rights situation. “Most Muslim countries have long been aware of the United States’ deception and understand that the US is only using human rights issues as an excuse to interfere in the internal affairs of China and other developing countries,” he said.
China has faced criticism over its treatment of ethnic Uyghurs, but Beijing has consistently rejected it as interference in China’s internal affairs. Beijing’s achievements in protecting and promoting human rights have been widely recognized and the development and progress in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is a testament to all parties.
“China is willing to engage in dialogue with all countries on human rights issues based on equality,” he concluded. (I-2)
