BEIJING (AP) — China has named a new defense minister following months of uncertainty following the dismissal of his predecessor for reasons that have not yet been explained.

Former Navy Commander Dong Jun will occupy the position, which is largely ceremonial, announced the official news agency, Xinhua, which did not explain the reasons for the change or the circumstances in which the former head of Defense, Li, finds himself. Shangfu, who has not been heard from since August.

The uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the world’s largest standing army comes as the United States and its Asian allies offer greater resistance to China’s attempt to establish itself as the dominant military power in the region.
