China and Russia Welcome Indonesia’s Wish to Join BRICS

CHINA positively welcomes Indonesia’s desire to join the big BRICS family. Russia also conveyed a similar response.

“BRICS is an open and inclusive mechanism, we welcome more like-minded partners, including Indonesia, to join the BRICS family,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian at a press conference in Beijing, Monday (28/10/2024 ).

“As an important platform for emerging economies and developing countries to enhance solidarity and cooperation and uphold common interests, the BRICS cooperation mechanism has become a positive and stable force for good in international relations,” continued Lin.

Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov stated that Russia was very happy with Indonesia’s decision to officially join the BRICS economic bloc.

“We are very happy that the new President of Indonesia took this decision,” said Tolchenov at a press briefing in Jakarta, Monday (28/10/2024).

He added that Indonesia’s decision to officially join BRICS proves that Indonesia is serious about implementing a free and active foreign policy.

“Indonesia does not want to join any bloc or camp in the modern world, as some people imagine,” he said.

Not only that, Indonesia’s decision is an important step which also shows that Indonesia wants to be part of a group of like-minded countries.

At the BRICS Plus Summit (Summit) in Kazan, Russia on October 24 2024, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono stated Indonesia’s desire to join BRICS as a form of free and active foreign policy.

At the 16th BRICS Summit, Indonesia was officially recognized as a BRICS partner country along with 12 other countries. Southeast Asian countries that are also BRICS partners apart from Indonesia are Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is an intergovernmental organization that was initially created to highlight investment opportunities and later evolved into a geopolitical bloc. (Ant/P-3)
