Chimay: an octogenarian victim of a rear-view mirror scam is stripped of 3000 euros

It is SudInfo which tells this story of an 87-year-old Chimacien returning from the store. He is unloading his groceries when a car registered in Spain, with two people on board, stops. The driver gets out and calls out to him, pointing out that he has hung up his mirror and scratched his car and, in addition, he has fled. The octogenarian, surprised, goes to see this person’s car and actually sees a claw. The driver dissuades him from calling the police, offers to settle the problem amicably and even telephones his so-called insurer. “The Insurer” advises the octogenarian to pay the deductible and leave it at that. A deductible amounting to 3000 euros for minimal damage! The victim was chosen for his vulnerability. The crooks put pressure by explaining that at 87, this collision with hit and run would probably be synonymous with loss of license or obligation to iron it.

The Chimacian does not understand the scam. He will even go with his crooks to the bank to withdraw the sum and give it to them before seeing them vanish. It was only the next day when he went to his broker that the octogenarian became aware of the scam. Complaint was filed with the police who, alas, have already learned of similar facts considered to be “abuse of persons”.
