- The young person must serve 2 years in a closed regime, 3 in a semi-closed regime and complete a social reintegration program
The Chilean justice system sentenced the Venezuelan teenager detained to 5 years in prison for participating in the kidnapping and homicide of former Venezuelan lieutenant Ronald Ojeda.
According to local media, the teenager must serve 2 years of the sentence in a closed regime and 3 in a semi-closed regime, with a social reintegration program.
In addition, he will be credited for the time he has already spent in preventive detention, since March 2024. “We expect a greater sentence when the extradition of Mikael Villegas from Costa Rica is completed, and that the other culprits are arrested, now that Chile has to the Investigative Police (PDI) and to Carabineros at Interpol,” said Juan Carlos Maríquez, lawyer for Ojeda’s family.
The teenager, the only one detained in the case in Chile, was accused of “providing cover” to the subjects who posed as PDI agents to kidnap Ojeda.
During his confinement, the teenager was punished for possessing drugs, having a sharp weapon, and attacking officials at the detention center in the commune (municipality) of Tiltil, in the Metropolitan region of Santiago.
The chief prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Homicide Teams (ECOH) of Chile, Álex Cortez, recalled that Costa Rica agreed to extradite the accused Maikel Villegas, who was charged by the Chilean authorities in his absence, after his arrest on the border between Costa Rica and Panama.
“This extradition should take place in the coming months,” stressed the prosecutor.
On July 15, Costa Rica’s Minister of Public Security, Mario Zamora Cordero, confirmed that Villegas was held in a maximum security prison in the country while the extradition process to Chile was completed.
Villegas’ arrest occurred on July 12, thanks to the collaboration of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in Costa Rica, who identified the suspect through his fingerprint while he was trying to pass through that country from South America in the direction of USA.
The murder of Ronald Ojeda
Ojeda’s kidnapping occurred on February 21 in the commune of Independencia, in Santiago de Chile and was recorded on the security cameras of the building where the Venezuelan lived.
Subsequently, Chilean authorities reported on the night of March 1 that they found the body of the former Venezuelan military officer in a camp in the commune of Maipú.
According to the Chilean media BioBiothe body was found under a cement pit.
“The approximate date of death, according to Demecri’s doctor from the PDIpoints out that it is between 7 and 10 days. Therefore, it also coincides with the date on which the kidnapping occurred,” explained Chilean prosecutor Héctor Barros.
