Chilean Foreign Minister explains why Boric does not recognize Edmundo González as Venezuela’s president-elect

Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren attended the Foreign Relations Committee of the Lower House, where he stated that the Government sees a “high possibility of fraud in Venezuela,” but they rule out recognizing Edmundo González as president-elect.

Accompanied by the Chilean ambassador to Venezuela, Jaime Gazmuri, who was recently expelled by Nicolás Maduro, the minister said that the opposition leader has not yet been recognized because this process “is the responsibility of the respective country and not another country.”

He also stated that “contrary to what some media have said, very few countries have recognized Edmuno González.” Most of them, the United States, the European Union and some mediating countries, have continued to criticize the electoral process.

“Regarding the possibility of fraud, we believe it is very high, we do not deny that. But that does not mean that we can recognize Edmundo Gonzalez, beyond his qualities…”, he said.

Along the same lines, he argued that the international community does not want to repeat “the experience of interim president Juan Guaidó, because it was not effective and did not result in a change in Venezuela.”
