The Chilean Film Academy defined the national films that will compete for a place in the Oscar Awards and Goya Awards.
In the first instance, the chosen one was “The Settlers”, by Felipe Gálvezwhile for the Spanish award the nominee was “Infinite memory”the new documentary of Love Alberdi.
“Chilean cinema this year has a lot to celebrate”noted Lorena Giachino Torréns, representative of the local Academy board.
“The participation of the members of the Chilean Film Academy was historic. In this selection, 67% voted for the film for the Oscar and 70% to choose our representative at the Goyas, which shows the growing interest in being part of these processes and also gives the films legitimacy. they deserve when it comes to being elected,” he added.
“The producers carried out their campaigns at the highest level and having a film for the Goyas and a different one for the Oscars only speaks of our diversity and quality. It is clear that the prestige of Chilean cinema at an international level is no longer ‘once in a while’. It has been here for a long time to stay, ”he said.
The organization is backed by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage. “Chilean audiovisual work puts us in the world”, summed up the minister Caroline Arredondo.
“It is very important to be in the race for a nomination in two of the most important awards worldwide, with two productions so different from each other. On the one hand, the colonization in Chilean Patagonia and the genocide of the Selk’nam people; and on the other, the tremendous love story between Paulina Urrutia and Augusto Góngora, and how they faced a diagnosis as harsh as Alzheimer’s ”, she pointed out.
Director of “The Settlers”: “I feel a great responsibility”
It is not common for a first film to triumph in the parallel instances of the Cannes Film Festival, let alone for it to be chosen to represent the country at the Oscars. This was the surprising case of “Los colonos”, the first feature film by Felipe Gálvez, which won the Fipresci award from international critics at the French festival.
The film will also participate in the festivals of Toronto, New York and San Sebastianand will have its theatrical release in the United States, England, France, Spain, Germany, Taiwan, Japan and Canada.
“It is a great honor for me to know that “Los colonos” has managed to captivate the Chilean Film Academy. I feel a great responsibility to represent our country in a year as important as this one, of great films and great filmmakers, who show the diversity and quality of our cinematography”, reacted Gálvez.
“New challenges are coming for Los colonos, which will begin its Oscar campaign on an important day for the memory of Chile, next September 11, at its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. It is a hard film, but necessary that makes us remember what for centuries has tried to keep quiet; without euphemisms but with the greatest respect to those who have been systematically erased from history”, he said.
