Chile wishes to maintain a “very virtuous dialogue” with the new Government that Donald Trump will form after winning last Tuesday’s presidential elections in the United States, Chile’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, said this Friday.
“We are committed to maintaining a very virtuous dialogue with the United States, as it has always been,” the vice chancellor told EFE by telephone from Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, where she ended an African tour that this week also took her to Kenya and South Africa.
“Relations are between States, beyond what governments can maintain. We and the United States have a very long and very virtuous relationship of more than 200 years of bilateral relationship,” De la Fuente stressed.
In this regard, he highlighted that the free trade agreement with the United States “is twenty years old” and “has been sustainable and positive” for Chile.
Political impact
Regarding the possible impact of the new US Administration’s policies in Latin America, the vice minister pointed out that “it is still too risky to say anything.”
“What we have, I believe, and this we probably share with several countries in the region, is the will to continue dialogue with the United States because we understand that we face many circumstances, common challenges,” he stated.
“For example, the migratory challenge of human mobility is a challenge that all our countries face. And we understand from Chile that the only possibility of adequately facing the complexity of the phenomenon of human mobility is with cooperation,” added the vice chancellor.
Congratulations from Boric
The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, congratulated Trump last Wednesday on his victory in Tuesday’s elections, in which the Republican candidate defeated the vice president of the United States, Democrat Kamala Harris, after a close campaign.
“Chile reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the relationship with the United States in favor of inclusive development, respect for human rights and care for democracy in our region. We continue working for the good of our people,” Boric wrote on his account. from social network X.
Boric, who when he was a deputy was very critical of Trump’s management during his first term (2017-2021), was one of the last Latin American leaders to congratulate Trump.
