Chile Vamos’s gubernatorial quota puts tension on the parties in the bloc – La Discusión 2024-07-16 06:39:37

July has begun, and the electoral clock is beginning to tick as the various pacts and parties define their electoral cards.

In the case of the regional governor elections, Chile Vamos has not yet designated who will represent them in October, following the initial candidate, Cristóbal Jardúa (UDI), declined to run.

Since then, various names have been proposed by the unions: regional councillors Lorena Jardua and John Polanco and the former regional minister of Education of Biobío, Benjamín Maureira, among others; however, interest has also arisen from the other two parties in the bloc – RN and Evópoli – mainly because the unions have not proposed any truly competitive names.

According to the regional president of the UDI, Isabel Troncoso, “there is an agreement, both between the national leadership of Chile Vamos, and between those of us who represent the regions. And it was made very clear that the quota for the mayorship of Chillán was for RN (which is nominating Sergio Zarzar), and that the quota to compete for the regional governorship of Ñuble is for the UDI. I want to make that very clear, this is also established in the national agreement that was ratified on Friday, where 284 candidates for mayors were confirmed, and a significant part of the candidates for regional governors. There is no going back on that, in other words, the quota is for the UDI,” she stressed.

In the case of Ñuble, he added, “as established in the document, it is being decided through a survey that is measuring the electoral potential of the three UDI candidates (Lorena Jardua, John Polanco and Benjamín Maureira). The results, which the electoral committee of our party will have in sight, will allow us to define the candidate in the next few days. Everything else that can be said is aspirations, otherwise logical, that people have; or people with bad intentions suddenly, who send surveys to divert the attention of the community, but that are mere speculations, they are not within the agreement,” he said.

Rodrigo González, regional president of RN, said that his group is calm.

“We have a candidate that we have had since day one, who is Roger Cisterna, former governor of President Piñera, former regional minister of the Economy. We believe that he is a friendly person, very hard-working, and that he has all the conditions to represent the region. So in any case, RN will continue to have that name available for a decision that has to be made between the parties, and then, because we want to close the lists as soon as possible,” he said.

González added that between the groups of the center block and Chile Vamos, “we are working hard to be able to go together, to be able to work on the best names. We already have a broad agreement on the municipal elections, but it is essential that we can also have a competitive name for the regional government, and in that sense, we believe that today, Roger Cisterna is the most competitive of the candidates presented,” he stressed.

From Evópoli, its regional president, Alejandro Mellado, said that “as Chile Vamos we have reactivated the meetings of regional presidents, as well as the PDG and Amarillos have joined, in addition to a prompt meeting with the Republican Party. The current scenario allows us to open the table, where names have been proposed to evaluate and define at the time the best candidate to compete in October 2024 in the election for regional governor of Ñuble,” he said.

As for Evópoli Ñuble, he added, “we have also proposed a name, our idea is to unite ideas and strategies to achieve, based on the union of the sector and political side, to present a consensual candidate who leads the way to the governorship. We understand that we are once morest time, but we are working in a serious and orderly manner to be able to agree, define and present that name as soon as possible,” he mentioned.

From the center

From Amarillos por Chile, its regional president, Reinaldo Figueroa, stated that they have already decided to support the current independent core, Cristian Quilodrán.

Amarillos por Chile in the Ñuble region has not given support to any candidate for governor other than the acting councillor, Cristian Quilodrán. This is a regional authority whose performance as a councillor has been very outstanding due to the audits carried out and his ability to detect errors in decision-making. Mr. Quilodrán has the conditions of personal and leadership skills that make him a candidate for regional governor with serious possibilities. I can point out that those who today identify themselves in the Ñuble region as opponents of the current government can feel very well represented by Cristian. “Quilodrán,” said Figueroa.

Meanwhile, Democrats have set the presentation of their candidates for councillors and regional councillors of Ñuble for this Friday, July 5. Their names or support for the governorship have not yet been announced.
