On May 10, the legal propaganda period for the mayoral primaries will begin. In the Ñuble Region, the mechanism will only be applied in Coihueco and Portezuelo, communes where Chile Vamos decided to let the electorate decide who will represent them.
Coihueco
After completing his third term, the current mayor, Carlos Chandía (RN), passed the baton to his municipal administrator, journalist Russel Cabrera, who competes as an independent in the RN quota.
“I hope for a primary day in which there is significant participation from the community, so that the definition of the Chile Vamos candidate for mayor is carried out in a democratic, informed and calm manner. It is very important that voters who have joined our sector, and above all, who have supported the current administration of Mayor Carlos Chandía, take part. We believe that this primary will set a trend with respect to the final result of October, and that is why it is so relevant,” said Cabrera.
He added that “Coihueco is a very important commune in the Ñuble Region, which has made notable progress in recent years, and we have the capacity to continue growing under the seal of the current administration, but with several proposals for change to refresh the new challenges ahead. Along these lines, what motivates me to participate is to transmit to the community in advance my proposals in relevant areas in which we want to continue growing, such as public safety, health, sports, culture, family recreation, connectivity and productivity, among others. many others,” he said.
Meanwhile, the UDI hopes to keep the quota, thanks to the former councilor, Juan Muñoz. “As a Coihuecano born in this land, and following having served for eight years as a councilor, I am enormously grateful for the new opportunity that life has given me to run for the position of mayor. I know and greatly value what Coihueco has advanced with Mayor Carlos Chandía, and now what corresponds is to face new challenges, especially giving life to all the infrastructures that have been inaugurated, promoting folklore, the arts of our cultural center, promoting sport in our sports venues, finally building a more integrated and happy community, where we can develop in all areas with a mayor who is close and at the service of all,” he stated.
Muñoz stated: “we are deployed on the ground, with a lot of optimism. The community is very informed regarding this primary process. We hope to have a great participation on Sunday, June 9 in the commune of Coihueco.”
Portezuelo
After a rather atypical 2021 election, in which only the current mayor – who is serving his three terms -, René Schuffeneger (RN), ran; Chile Vamos decided to define in a primary who will face the ruling party in October.
The UDI is betting on the current councilor and former regional coordinator of Public Security, Alan Ibáñez.
“We are very optimistic and happy that Portezuelo, in an unprecedented way in its history, has a primary, so that our neighbors can democratically elect their candidate for mayor of Chile Vamos. We are inviting the community to dare to change, to dare to set higher goals for our community in the coming years, which ultimately translates into a better quality of life for all neighbors. This candidacy recognizes and values what has been achieved in the last decade in Portezuelo, however, our proposal is not one of continuity. We want to provoke a turning point for the commune and strengthen the pending tasks, such as the improvement of communal connectivity, the strengthening of our productive development and the generation of employment, the possibility of advancing for our young people, our women, having a better health in the community. Also for our older adults, people with disabilities, with a cesfam that is pending its materialization, and of course, enhance security policies, given that crime and drug addiction is a reality present in all the communes of Ñuble , and Portezuelo is no stranger to that,” he asserted.
Renovación Nacional, meanwhile, hopes to reach the ballot in October with the current municipal administrator, Adán Zapata.
“I hope that these primaries are clean, because I have unfortunately seen that propaganda is already being made at inappropriate times. I hope people participate a lot, because it is something that we have asked for, it is a fight that we have waged through the community, through the regional board, we were speaking with the board at the national level asking that this decision to hold primaries be a fact in Portezuelo, and not that it is decided in the ‘kitchen’ or that it is decided in Santiago, between four walls,” he stated.
He added that “I am very motivated by the 42 years that I have lived in my commune, of which 23 I have dedicated myself to working there, in local media, in schools, also working in the municipality of Portezuelo itself, always offering a possibility people to bring services closer to them and also serve from any angle in which one may be. The great motivation that I have today to be in these primaries is nothing more and nothing less than service to the community.”
