This week, the Chilean government presented a series of measures in favor of Venezuelan migrants in its territory, an action that comes after the closure of the Embassy in Venezuela, as well as the Consulate in Santiago.
The objective is to make immigration criteria for the aforementioned group less strict when carrying out procedures in this area.
Officially, the National Migration Service (Sermig) will be in charge of receiving visa applications, exempting applicants from submitting documentation that must be legalized or apostilled at the consular office.
Regularization requests from minors whose passports or identity cards have expired, as well as birth certificates that have not been apostilled, will also be monitored.
In addition, Chile extended the validity of the use of expired passports by Venezuelans before the immigration agency.
The Whistle reported that the Chilean government’s consideration came after organizations such as New Land Migrants and the Venezuelan Association in Chile will be presented at the Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples Commission of the Chilean Congress to highlight how the closure of consular offices and embassies impacts migrants.
