He Government and the European Union (EU) modernized the trade agreement between both parties. Specifically, at the end of last year Chile and the bloc made a “political” closure to the text.
Some adjustments are still in progress and one of them refers to two types of cheeses widely consumed in Chile: the “gruyère” and “parmesan”.
The Undersecretary of International Economic Relations (Sighs) explained that in the framework of the modernization of the Association Agreement, lThe EU requested protection and accreditation associated with the terms (uses) of the names of those cheeses.
Both are included in a list of 216 geographical indications for food products.
Therefore, it was agreed that users -mostly companies- that can prove use in the Chilean market of the terms “gruyère” and “parmesan” during the last twelve months prior to the publication of the Agreement in Principle (December 9, of 2022), they will be able to continue using them without limitation of time.
For this purpose, a joint agreement was established with the EU. reception procedure and background checkwhere users must present labels and/or invoices that demonstrate their presence in the Chilean market on a recurring basis in the twelve months prior to December 9, 2022.
The Subrei indicated that applications and background information will be received until June 19, 2023.
