Chile Earthquake Updates: Latest Tremors, Safety Tips, and National Seismological Center Reports

During the day this Tuesday, earthquakes of slight intensity have been recorded in different places in the country.

However, most of the movements are imperceptible, because Chile is located on the limit of the Nazca tectonic plate, where it impacts the South American plate.

For security reasons, it is important to stay informed regarding the recent earthquakes that have occurred in the country, a task carried out by the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.

These are the earthquakes reported today by Seismology:

22:31 hours

They preliminarily report a magnitude 5.8 tremor, with an epicenter 53 km south of Huasco and at a depth of 36 km.

10:26 hours

Earthquake of magnitude 3.5, with epicenter 30 km south of San José de Maipo and at a depth of 122 km.

07:09 hours

Earthquake of magnitude 3.2, occurred 58 km east of Ollagüe and at a depth of 195 km.

04:10 hours

They report a magnitude 3.0 earthquake, located 104 km west of Taltal and at a depth of 19 km.

00:28 hours

Earthquake of magnitude 3.0, occurred 74 km southwest of Tongoy and regarding 38 km deep.

The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service provided some recommendations on what to do when an earthquake occurs.

These are the suggestions reported by Senapred:

  • Stay calm and look for a place of seismic protection.
  • Protect yourself under a firm element. If this is not possible, stay next to the same object.
  • Turn off the electricity and close the water and gas valves.
  • If you are on the street, stay away from buildings, poles and electrical cables.
  • If you are at a mass event, the person must stay in place and protect their head and neck with their arms. In addition, you will also have to follow the instructions of those in charge of security at the venue.
  • If you are driving in a tunnel, bridge or highway, you should slow down and stop following leaving the area.
