Chile: buyers in Santiago devastate oil after supermarket offer due to price hike

groups of people in Chile they ransacked boxes of oil which, supposedly, were offered at a cheaper price than the current one in a wholesale supermarket in La Serena, located in the center of Santiago.

The fact has been highly criticized by several citizens, due to the collection of a product for daily use.

Through social networks, videos were broadcast where people are seen taking cars full of boxes of oil, with a liter valued at 1,250 Chilean pesos (6.25 soles, approximately), according to the Chilean portal 24horas.

In Chile, a bottle of oil can reach 3,000 or 4,000 pesos (between 13 and 15 soles) when before they could find it for half that price. Other products such as chicken, fish, pasta and even bread also raised their costs in the neighboring country.

In another of the videos, a crowd of people is shown running and taking out the last boxes of the product that were left in the supermarket.

The increase in prices is due to external factors

According to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the consumer price index in February posted an increase of 9.1% in 12 months, its largest variation since the new price basket began in 2020 .

Francisca Pérez, chief economist at Bci, told Thirdthat external factors have been stronger, especially as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which have raised the international prices of various foods.
