Chile: Boric asks carriers to lift roadblocks in the country or “the law will prevail”

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boricgave an ultimatum to the carrier groups that block the roads in protest at the rise in the fuel price. The president asserted that, if the protests do not cease, “the law will prevail” to recover them.

“It is not acceptable and it is our duty as a government, and my duty as President of the Republic, to guarantee free transit through our country,” Boric asserted, according to the newspaper ‘La Tercera’.

trucker groups have been launched to block some roads of Chile also to demand greater security following the acts of violence recorded in the south of the country, where this weekend one person died and two others were injured.

According to the latest report from the Carabineros police force, the roadblocks affected eight cities throughout the country, including Arica, Calama, Alto Hospicio, Copiapó, Coquimbo, Rancagua, Parral and Curicó.

“Since we took office, we have carried out a permanent dialogue with the main groups of truck drivers in Chile,” explained Boric, who, however, lamented that those who “have decided to cut off the routes of Chileans (…) They have not wanted to join these conversations.

Before Boric’s statement, the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, had also spoken in the same terms and had set 4:00 p.m. (local time) for the cessation of the blockades. Later, the carriers announced that they would end the road closures one hour later, at 5:00 p.m. (local time).
