Children’s Day that is celebrated this Sunday, August 20, is a special date for each family to recognize the valuable importance of childhood and also of rights that girls and boys have been conquering in recent years.
Year following year, Children’s Day is celebrated, which offers the opportunity to “pamper” the little ones and also to reflect on the appropriate conditions for children to grow up healthy, happy and able to fully enjoy their basic rights.
The recognition of the rights of girls and boys It is the result of legislation that has been developed for decades in different parts of the world. Its origin dates back to international treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989, which received the name of Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)a document that recognizes all persons under the age of 18 as full subjects.
throughout their 54 articles, are defined basic human rights which children and adolescents enjoy, and there the best interests of children, the right to life, survival and development, the participation of children and non-discrimination are considered.
With the accession of 190 countries (with the exception of the United States) it is established that the States that ratify said treaty must obligatorily ensure that all minors under 18 years of age enjoy the exercise of the rights contained in it without distinction of race, color, language, birth or any other condition of the child, their parents or their legal representatives.
Argentina ratified the CRC in 1990 and in 1994 went a step further, granting it constitutional status following the Pact of Olivos. In turn, Law 26,061, on Comprehensive Protection of the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents, enacted in 2005, establishes the mandatory application of the Convention.
