James Elder, the spokesperson of the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, said that the safety of children in Palestine and Israel is more difficult and both parties involved in the conflict must comply with international laws regarding the safety of children in the Palestinian-Israeli war that has been going on for five days. In a press conference held in Geneva on Wednesday, October 10, the spokesperson of UNICEF spoke regarding the crisis faced by children in the intensified Palestinian-Israeli conflict following the missile attacks carried out by Hamas on Israel the previous day.
The elder reminded that the abduction, maiming and holding of children and their families as part of the conflicts cannot be justified in any way and the situation of the children will worsen if the conflicts do not end soon.
Hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian children have been reported killed and many injured in the past five days. A UNICEF spokesperson said that killing and mutilating children is a serious violation of international humanitarian law. Taking children and adults as hostages is once morest international law and UNICEF demanded the immediate release of the abductees.
According to the figures of the last few days, there are almost two lakh new refugees in Gaza Strip alone. They have many children. Even before the escalation of tensions between the two countries, the UNICEF spokesperson stated that 11 million children, almost half of the children living in Gaza and the West Bank, were in need of humanitarian assistance.
Israel’s blocking of electricity, food, water and fuel from reaching the Gaza Strip will worsen the current plight of the children. UNICEF called for an immediate end to the current conflicts and to ensure the protection of children.
