Barcelona, March 5. (EFE).- The prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and president of Caritas International, Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, has warned this Saturday, in relation to the war in Ukraine, that children, the elderly and the sick are the “great forgotten” in any conflict.
This was indicated by Tagle in Barcelona, where he gave the conference “Welcome and accompany the new generations”, in the CCIB Forum Auditorium before a thousand people.
In his speech, the prelate acknowledged that the Church as a whole is saddened by the war in Ukraine, but also by all the “forgotten” conflicts in the world, for which he valued the task of the Church, of Caritas volunteers and workers who work in Ukraine in support of the most vulnerable sectors that suffer the consequences of armed conflicts.
“Children, the elderly or the sick are the great forgotten in any conflict, and we have to keep them very present. Cáritas shows the face of love, with humility, but also with pride. It does not ask where you come from, what you work for or what you think, but rather help without asking for anything in return”, assured the priest.
In his speech, he also confirmed that decision-makers live far from the experiences of the most vulnerable and encouraged them to be closer to the people.
In this sense, he has called on citizens to be concerned regarding all the conflicts in the world, and not just the closest ones, given what he has quoted Pope Francis and asked to discover brotherhood: “We are all the same family, regardless of where we were born or what we believe.
The cardinal has also argued that today’s young people are developing a “feeling of self-sufficiency” and that, as a result of social networks, they are falling into individualism and disregard for others.
However, he pointed out that this scenario should be viewed with a positive eye, since he sees it as an opportunity to welcome and accompany young people who feel more and more alone.
Cardinal Tagle visits Barcelona this weekend, within the framework of the V Centenary of the Evangelization of the Philippines, invited by the Archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Juan José Omella. EFE.
