Children born during times of food shortage actually have a higher risk of developing diabetes (type 2 diabetes) later in life, reports Peter Klimek from the Medical University of Vienna. In men, the effect is more dramatic than in women. Those affected are often also afflicted by concomitant diseases such as heart failure, high blood pressure, lung damage and kidney diseases.
