Siblings often have difficult relationships. One that might be described as a love-hate relationship. On the one hand, they are deeply connected to each other, but on the other hand, they secede each other to the point of blood. Psychologists refer to this as emotional ambivalence. And that seems to serve an important purpose for siblings. “The family with parents and siblings is the child’s first social group, the first long-term training ground, a model for interpersonal relationships,” says Jürgen Frick. The Swiss psychologist and sibling researcher has been working intensively on sibling relationships for 25 years.
