LONGMEADOW, Mass. (AP) — Two children suffered what were described as “burn-like injuries” playing on acid-sprayed slides at a Massachusetts playground, authorities said.

Police and firefighters responded to Bliss Park in Longmeadow on Sunday morning over a report that a foreign substance was on the rides, firefighters said on social media.

At the same time, emergency medical personnel went to a house in the city where it was reported that two children had just left the park with burns.

Authorities determined that someone broke into the park’s pool chemical storage and stole muriatic acid. The acid, which is used to clean the pool or maintain the pH balance of the water, was poured over three slides.

Evidence was gathered for forensic analysis at the state crime lab.

No one has been charged, but authorities say the suspect(s) likely suffered injuries as well.

“We suspect the perpetrators may have suffered acid burns to their hands or arms and their clothing may show signs of degradation due to contact with acid,” said the statement issued by firefighters in Longmeadow, a city adjacent to Springfield in the west. from Massachusetts.

Hazardous substances have been removed from the park, but the park was still fenced off Tuesday.
