Children and adolescents who consume more fruits and vegetables have better mental well-being

The scientific community has shown how a higher intake of fruits and vegetables is linked to the mental well-being of male and female high school students.

To reach this conclusion, the team from the University of East Anglia, in the United Kingdom, together with the UEA Health and Social Care Partners and the Norfolk County Council, studied data from nearly 9,000 children and adolescents from 50 schools in Norfolk, England, international media review.

Each student responded to the Norfolk Children and Youth Health and Wellbeing Survey during 2017, there self-reported their dietary choices and participated in a series of mental health testsassociated with their age to know:

  • Happiness
  • Relaxation
  • Good interpersonal relations

“In terms of nutrition, we found that only regarding a quarter of children in secondary school and 28% of elementary school children reported eating the recommended fruits and vegetables five times a day. And just under one in ten children did not eat fruits or vegetables, “said the professor Alisa Welch from the UEA Norwich Medical School.

They also indicated that those children who have low levels of emotional well-beingThey did not eat lunch or breakfast.
