Childhood trauma leaves following-effects. According to a recent study, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, or neglect, alone or combined with other types of childhood trauma, increases risk of chronic pain and disability associated with adulthood.

This study was carried out using data from numerous research carried out over 75 years and involving 826,452 adults. “We have systematically observed that exposures to adverse childhood experiences are associated with chronic pain conditions in adulthood, regardless of types of experiences, types of pain conditions, geographic location, and over time,” the authors report.

Implement targeted interventions

According to the findings published in theEuropean Journal of Psychotraumatology, researchers found that people exposed to a traumatic event during childhood were 45% more likely to report chronic pain as adults than those not exposed. Additionally, childhood physical abuse was associated with a higher likelihood of reporting both chronic pain and pain-related disability.

“These results are extremely worrying, especially since more than a billion children, i.e. half of the world’s child population are exposed to traumatic events every year, putting them at increased risk of chronic pain and disability later in life,” says lead author Dr. André Bussières, of the School of Physics and Physics at McGill University, in Canada. Before continuing: “There is an urgent need to develop targeted interventions and support systems to break the cycle of adversity and improve long-term health outcomes for people who have been exposed to trauma during childhood “.
