After a few days, they may disappear, but there are cases in which the conditions evolve into more serious inflammation of the lungs, which requires hospitalization and treatment. According to scientists, the justification for this increase in hospital admissions is the relaxation of measures that protect once morest Covid-19.

In Denmark, for example, reports were made 541 cases pneumonia caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae, according to the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (Cidrap). China responded to questions from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the emergence of an outbreak of pneumonia affecting children in the northern region of the country. In a video conference held last Thursday (23), the global health authority and representatives of the Chinese government discussed the recent cases in the child population.

According to the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Children’s Hospital, the outbreak of pneumonia in children is due to a high number of diseases that have proliferated following measures to combat coronavirus were relaxed, such as the use of mask and social distancing, for example.

Chinese hospitals and outpatient clinics have registered a high volume of hospitalizations of children due to respiratory diseases in recent weeks, a situation that raises a warning signal for foreign governments. Among the reported cases are flu, Covid-19 and childhood bronchiolitis – caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

In addition to these viral diseases, a significant increase in cases of pneumonia caused by the bacteria was also recorded. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, an infection that usually affects younger children. The Chinese government claims that all outbreaks are from known pathogens, but the WHO says it does not yet have data for a concrete analysis.

“It is unclear when this outbreak began as it would be unusual for so many children to be affected so quickly. (…) ProMED awaits more definitive information on the etiology and scope of this worrying disease in China,” he says.

The Chinese health authority has not confirmed any deaths caused by this recent outbreak of pneumonia in the north of the country, but new information should be released soon.

The World Health Organization (WHO) asked the Chinese government for detailed explanations following several reports of cases of unknown pneumonia in children in the north of the country. The fear is that the number of incidents will spread quickly.

According to the WHO, a publication of the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED), of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), warned of reports of “clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia” in the country.

Also according to the program, “children’s hospitals in Beijing, Liaoning and other places were overwhelmed with many sick children”. Furthermore, “classes were almost suspended”, but the authorities would not have made that decision.

In view of this, the WHO asked China to present additional epidemiological and clinical data, in addition to laboratory results of cases registered in the child population. The ProMED statement mentions patients hospitalized with high fever and lung nodules.

Last week, members of China’s National Health Commission announced that the country was registering an increase in the incidence of respiratory diseases, caused by the reduction of restrictions to contain the spread of Covid-19 and the spread of pathogens.

The WHO highlighted that it is not yet possible to determine whether the increase in respiratory diseases in children is linked to the situation presented by the country’s health authorities or whether they are “separate events”. The entity reported that it is monitoring the situation.

Finally, the WHO recommended that the Chinese population continue with measures to prevent infections, such as keeping vaccinations up to date, not having contact with patients and washing their hands. The expectation is that the incidence of cases will reduce in the coming weeks.
