Child Crime in Corsica: Professionals Gather to Fight and Protect Victims

2024-01-15 17:30:42

The Mouv’Enfants caravan crosses Corsica, all week, to meet professionals who fight once morest child crime, gather their experience and their needs, and take stock of the situation. Today she was in Bastia.

Laetitia is sitting on one of the seats where jurors in assize trials usually sit. The debates had started almost two hours ago when she took the floor: “I was a victim of incest, around thirty years ago. I went to file a complaint, and a gendarme came to take my statement at home. I mightn’t say a word. I was devastated “.

Victims will speak when they are listened to

Years later, the trauma is still present. “We have to live with shame. But shame must change sides. And for that, speech must be freed. But it can only be freed if people stop lowering their heads, stopping looking away “Victims will speak when we listen to them. There is one child in ten who is a victim of incest. Obviously, around each of us, there is a victim who does not speak.”

Facing the dark-haired woman, wrapped in a large checkered scarf, educators, psychologists, magistrates, associations, child psychiatrists, police officers, gathered on the occasion of this first day of a week of meetings in Corsica, on the occasion of the arrival on the island of the Mouv’enfants Caravan.

Everyone is confronted, sometimes on a daily basis, with the distress of child victims of child crime. According to figures from the Council of Europe, one in five children are victims of sexual violence. And Corsica is not spared, even if it is difficult to know the figures.

These professionals are fighting, with the means at their disposal, once morest this scourge. And this day, organized in the courtroom of the Bastia courthouse, is an opportunity for them to share their experiences, to confide their doubts, to point out the problems they must face, despite the fact that child protection has been included among the major national causes of Macron’s five-year term.

Behind their commitment, almost a priesthood for some, it is difficult to hide the fatigue, the looming discouragement, the disappointments…

“The motivation of professionals on the ground is stronger than ever. But the lack of resources is obvious. There are things that might work, there is good will on both sides, but we must give , finally, the means for territories and professionals to protect children. That’s the question that arises: is Corsica a region that protects its children?” summarizes Paule Maerten, the Corsican Sexual Health Strategy coordinator, who coordinates the arrival of the caravan in Corsica.

After the morning of discussions, the followingnoon will be devoted to workshops, around the three axes hammered out by the Mouv’Enfants caravan: prevent, protect, fix.

Tomorrow Tuesday, she will be in Corte, on the Grimaldi campus, Wednesday in Porto-Vecchio, at the house of justice and law, and Thursday in Ajaccio, in the civil courtroom of the judicial court.

And on Friday, at the Campo dell Oro Hotel, at 9 a.m., a restitution of all the work of the week will be delivered. According to Paul Maerten, she “will serve to raise the problems encountered in the field, and the needs of the professional. The objective is to finally obtain the commitment of institutions. It is now urgent to move from reflection to action “.

160,000 children victims of sexual violence in France each year; 80% of sexual assaults on minors take place within the family; 6 out of 10 victims are not supported when they speak out; 50% of victims attempt suicide…

It is urgent to move from reflection to action.

The frightening figures painfully prove it.
