The incident happened on Tuesday a few kilometers north of the US east coast metropolis of New York City in North Castle, according to local police chief Peter Simonsen.
The boy’s parents would have brought him to safety as a result. It was initially unclear how serious the wounds were. “As far as I know, the injuries are not life-threatening, but he is still receiving treatment,” said Simonsen.
The police called and approached the bear, which was still in the garden of the house. When he still didn’t retreat, an officer shot the animal. There are up to 8,000 black bears in upstate New York, but they mostly live in mountainous regions. They are rare in the densely populated areas north of the metropolis of New York.
