Likewise, they also aim to share experience between NICUs on the management of premature patients and the involvement of their families in care during admission and discharge home.
The participating hospitals have presented their applications in two categories that are accompanied by a financial award of 2,000 euros each. The first category is the ‘Award for patient well-being’, which recognizes all those ideas, actions, initiatives or protocols aimed at promoting the well-being of the newborn and their families. The project ‘Elective extubation during skin-to-skin contact in the very premature newborn’ from the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital has been the winner. The main objective of this initiative is to evaluate the safety and tolerance of elective extubations in premature newborns in skin-to-skin contact compared to those performed in the incubator. The project focuses on skin-to-skin contact (SPC) or ‘kangaroo care’, highlighting its benefits by helping to better tolerate a procedure such as extubation.
The study’s conclusions demonstrate that extubations during skin-to-skin contact are safe, well tolerated and are not associated with a higher failure rate of this. Furthermore, the process favors the inclusion of mothers and fathers in the care of their sons or daughters, reinforcing the importance of their presence to improve the comfort of the newborn, reduce stress and contribute to the parent-child bond.
Dr. Miriam Morey, pediatrician at Vall d’Hebron Hospital comments that “with this study we intend to provide stronger evidence of the safety and benefits of extubating premature infants during skin-to-skin contact, with the aim of making it an option equally valid as extubation in the incubator. Receiving this award from Chiesi is an honor and recognition of care focused on the newborn and her parents, and we believe that it will also be a small boost to continue researching and disseminating these results.”
