Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes in Atlanta on Sunday, and the Kansas City Chiefs defense held on in a 22-17 victory over the Falcons.
The two-time defending Super Bowl champions have been far from perfect, but they have gone 3-0 on the season, winning their three games by a combined margin of 13 points.
The work of the defense must be commended for this latest triumph.
Coming off a win over the Eagles in Philadelphia, the Falcons (1-2) had two touchdown attempts to take the lead in the final minutes of the game, but to no avail.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins fumbled two passes in the end zone at the Chiefs’ six-yard line to end the first opportunity. On the final drive, with less than a minute left, running back Bijan Robinson was brought down at the 13-yard line for a loss on fourth down and a yard.
Mahomes, who was interception-hit, threw for 217 yards. He threw touchdown passes to receivers Rashee Rice and JuJu Smith Schuster. Kicker Harrison Butker made three field goals for the Chiefs.
Cousins completed 20 of 29 passes for 230 yards. He recorded a 13-yard touchdown pass to Drake London and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts that set up Robinson’s rushing score.
The Chiefs will try to maintain their perfect record next Sunday against the Chargers (2-1) in Los Angeles, while the Falcons will want to return to winning ways at home against the New Orleans Saints (2-1).
