(CNN) — Chicago’s emergency operations plan for extreme cold will remain active through Wednesday, the city announced in a news release. The statement also says additional warming centers will open in the city.

The National Weather Service said dangerously cold wind chills will continue through Wednesday morning in Chicago and might return Friday and Saturday.

Wind chills are not expected to exceed -10 degrees until Wednesday morning, the NWS said.

“Residents can expect extreme cold and should limit time spent outdoors,” the city of Chicago said in a statement.

“ Impacts include slippery road conditions due to ice and wind chill that might cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Motorists are recommended to reduce speed and take extreme caution when driving. If you have to be outside, wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves.”
