Chicago firefighter seriously injured after falling from roof during call on NW Side, officials say

CHICAGO – On Sunday evening, a Chicago firefighter’s life was put at risk when he fell through a light shaft while battling a fire, and he is currently in serious condition, according to statements from the Chicago Fire Department.
The alarming incident unfolded around 6:10 p.m. in the 800 block of North Hamlin Avenue, precisely within the Humboldt Park neighborhood, which is known for its vibrant community.
Initially, firefighters were alerted to an urgent situation involving multiple individuals believed to be trapped inside a three-story residential building engulfed in flames, igniting a full-scale emergency response from the fire department.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they encountered fierce flames ravaging the second floor and beginning to escalate to the third, prompting them to launch an aggressive exterior attack on the fire to prevent further spread.
Over 100 firefighters rallied to respond to this urgent call, showcasing the department’s dedication and commitment. Once the flames were somewhat under control, the firefighters shifted their efforts to attack the fire from within the building, in a coordinated effort to extinguish the blaze.
Crews commenced a thorough search to locate any individuals potentially trapped inside; fortunately, after an exhaustive search of the premises, it was confirmed that no one was trapped, with several residents having managed to evacuate on their own.
Approximately ten minutes into this high-pressure call, a firefighter working diligently on the roof unexpectedly lost his footing, resulting in a fall through a light shaft that sent him tumbling down to the basement area, as reported by CFD.
The injured firefighter was quickly transported by ambulance to Stroger Hospital, where he is receiving necessary treatment. His identity and age have yet to be disclosed to the public.
In addition to the injury of the firefighter, at least eight residents have been displaced as a consequence of the fire, highlighting the tragedy that unfolded during this incident, according to Chicago Fire Department statements.
