Chiara Leone won the number women’s 50m rifle 3 positions (women’s 50m rifle 3 positions) to deliver Switzerland’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics, on Friday (2/8).
The 26-year-old shotter took advantage of world champion Zhang Qiongyue’s two-under 9 in the elimination round to claim victory with an Olympic record 464.4 points.
American shooter Sagen Maddalena took silver with a score of 463.0 points after edging out third-placed Zhang in a penalty shootout with a score of 10.1 to 8.7.
Maddalena led after the prone position but her two poor shots in the first position series dropped her to fifth after the series, while Zhang moved to the top with a 1.4-point advantage.
But he came back level on points with Zhang in the shot that decided the bronze medal and survived to reach the final after a penalty shootout.
Zhang, who competed in her first Olympics at the age of 20, was satisfied with the bronze medal, which was China’s first Olympic medal in the event in eight years.

“To be honest, winning a medal in this event was beyond my expectations. I shot a few shots below 9, but for me it was more of a motivation for the future than a regret,” he said, as reported by Xinhua.
“I performed well in the first stage of the final, even better than my training. But I made some mistakes and that’s where I need to improve in the future,” he added.
China topped the shooting medal standings with four golds, two silvers and one bronze. The Olympic shooting events will run until August 5. (M-3)
