Chess World Cup 2023: R. Pragnananda Makes History in First Game Against Magnus Carlsen

Baku (Azerbaijan): In the first game of the Chess World Cup, Indian Grandmaster R. Pragnananda. Pragnananda’s progress is maintaining the possibility of writing history in the FIDE Chess World Cup.

The first game was tied following 35 moves. Pragnananda played with white balls in the first classical match. Carlsen and the Whites play in Wednesday’s second classic match.

The Chess World Cup Final consists of two classical games. Both players get 90 minutes for the first 40 moves. The rest of the game is given 30 minutes with 30 second increments for each move. Whoever scores more points becomes the champion. The winner of the second game will win the World Cup. If the match is tied, the game will go to a tiebreaker.

This is the first time the Indian player has played in the final since Viswanathan Anand. Anand is a two-time champion. The 18-year-old Pragnananda is the first Indian player to play in the final since the World Cup switched to a knockout format in 2005.

Pragnananda qualified for the title fight by defeating American player Fabiano Caruana, who is ranked third in the world, in a long semi-final fight until the rapid tiebreak (3.5-2.5). A tiebreak was required following the first two games of the semi-finals were tied. Pragnananda also qualified to play in the Candidates Chess Tournament to determine Ding Liren’s opponent in the World Chess Championship. He is the third youngest player to qualify for Candidate Chess. Predecessors include Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen.
