The World Chess Championship in blitz and rapid chess is scheduled to take place in Austria in 2024!

Vienna (OTS) Michael Stöttinger, President of the Austrian Chess Federation, presented Emil Sutovsky, CEO of the World Chess Federation FIDE, with the official bid for the World Chess Championship in Austria. The chances are excellent, the World Chess Federation should have decided in regarding 3 weeks.

We are very happy regarding Austria’s application and will hopefully be able to report back with a positive result soon“, so Emil Sutovsky (FIDE CEO).

The preferred host countries are Upper Austria and Salzburg, with a full World Cup to be played in both countries. These are 2 of the 3 official FIDE World Championships, which differ in the time control: a game of blitz chess lasts regarding 10 minutes, a game of rapid chess regarding 30 – 50 minutes and a game of standard chess can last 6 or 7 hours.

Blitz and Rapid are the two most attractive World Championships – we have put together a very attractive package for the World Chess Federation and are very optimistic“, says Michael Stöttinger (President ÖSB).

The defending champion and reigning world champion in blitz and rapid chess is the Norwegian world number one, Magnus Carlsen.

Alex Reed of honor at the presentation was the former world blitz and rapid chess champion Anna Muzychuk from the Ukraine. She will accompany the preparations as a kind of “ambassador” for both competitions and especially the women’s competitions.

In contrast to other sports, chess is not divided into women and men, in chess there is always an “open” competition in which everyone can play, and then there is usually a women’s tournament. Due to the character named “Dame” the term “Frauenschach” is used in German-speaking countries because “Frauenschach” might lead to misunderstandings.

All 4 competitions are to take place in Austria (Blitz Open, Blitz Women, Rapid (= Schnellschach) Open, Rapid Women). A total of around 100 participants are expected, including the entire world elite.
