Chennai: Chess 60 feet under the sea. The chess match was held under the sea adding to the excitement of the Chess Olympiad. Thambi also went under the sea along with the contestants.

The incident took place in the sea at Karambakkam, Neelankara, Mahabalipuram. Scuba diving instructor Arvind Tharunshree and his team played chess under the sea. Thambi, the lucky symbol of Chess Olympiad, came along with them. Instead of the clothes of scuba diving, the scuba diver came under the sea wearing a bodysuit and thambi mask.

A chess board and pieces of wood that do not float in water were brought for this. Communication was done in sign language. This is the first time that India has hosted the Chess Olympiad. Over 2,000 players participated in the Olympiad in both the Open and Women’s sessions.
