Ergonomics
The MX 10.0N RGB is a full-size keyboard with numeric keypad. Its metallic and ultra-thin chassis gives it a fairly high-end appearance while ensuring perfect rigidity. It remains very sober, with an entirely black dress and its borders which graze the keys. It is therefore more compact than many keyboards of this type: it measures a total of 42.5 x 12.7 x 2.2 cm and does not take up so much space on a desk.
Its remarkable thinness is obtained thanks to the presence of low profile mechanical switches, thinner than conventional switches. This is not without consequence on the comfort of use, since with such finesse, it is not necessary to use a palm rest. A foot that runs the full width of the keyboard is also placed at the back to raise it if necessary. Decorated with two hinges, this foot offers a rather original design which however has a disadvantage: it retracts automatically and it must therefore be kept in place when you want to move the keyboard on a desk. It has thus folded up a number of times while moving it, which is not very serious, but it can become annoying in the long run.
The keys are smooth, but we noticed that they weren’t anchored well and that they become misaligned with use. A finding common to other low profile keyboards, but which does not interfere with the quality of typing. This asymmetry is simply a bit unsightly.
The functions (F) offer only a few shortcuts: multimedia, adjustable backlight brightness on 5 levels (F5 and F6), selection of RGB profiles (F3) and scrolling speed of effects (on F7 and F8). The keyboard has a full and fully customizable RGB backlight. The advantage of these dedicated RGB shortcuts being that it can be modified on the fly without going through software. To go further, however, it is possible to use Cherry Utility to modify key shortcuts and backlight colors and effects key by key.
Finally, the keyboard’s USB-C to USB-A cable measures 1.6 m and is detachable, should it need to be replaced, for example. The USB-C tip is however cut to the millimeter to be connected, which should prohibit the use of cables from other brands. Besides, this cable is not paracord, unlike other high-end keyboards, and its classic rubber should wear out more quickly.
Struck
For this MX 10.0N RGB, Cherry did not choose classic MX Red switches, but MX Speed switches which are much more sensitive and faster. It is thus possible to write at lightning speed, but this sensitivity risks causing a lot of typos, especially at the beginning. Their activation stroke is linear at barely 1 mm (one of the shortest available), but they can travel up to 3.2 mm and their activation force is 45 cN, just like the classic MX Reds. They are also guaranteed for 100 million clicks, which should ensure excellent longevity. The rebound, however, seemed a little soft to use. The MX Speed low profile switches are therefore effective, but their activation sensitivity and soft rebound will not necessarily appeal to everyone.
Mechanical switches oblige, the keyboard can be used to play, especially since Cherry integrates the N-key rollover and theanti-ghosting to be able to press as many keys as desired without the problem of unwanted activation. In any case, the keyboard is silent for a mechanical model and the chassis does not display any resonance, unless you have a really heavy hand on typing.
