Chernobyl’s Radiation Levels Spike Due to Proximate Wildfire

Norway’s Radioactive and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) said in a statement yesterday that measurements it had taken showed “very low” levels of radioactive cesium at Svanhovd and Vikjjoefjel near the border with Russia in the Arctic.

The authority, it added in its statement, detected elevated levels of radioactive cesium (Cs-137) in Svanhod from 9-16 September and in Vikjøefjel from 5-12 September, but the levels did not endanger people or the environment.

“DSA always finds cesium in all air filter stations in Norway, and this often comes from stirring up dust from old fallout from the Chernobyl accident,” it said in a statement today.

“This time the forest fire around Chernobyl is most likely to blame.”

Finland’s radioactivity and nuclear energy authority also said in a statement that slightly higher levels of cesium were detected at all six collection stations.

“The amounts detected are very small,”

The highest level observed now is 11 microbecquerels per cubic meter, while normal readings at the stations are less than one microbequerel per cubic meter, he says, adding that those readings are too small.

In its announcement it also states that the average concentration of radon in Finnish homes is 90 becquerels per cubic meter, i.e. one million times higher.

“Therefore, these are indeed tiny quantities,” the announcement states.

On April 26, 1986, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Soviet Union went out of control, causing an explosion and fire that destroyed the reactor building and released large amounts of radioactivity into the atmosphere.

The accident resulted in the scattering of quantities of iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137 over parts of northern Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and northern and central Europe.

On September 9, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) said that 399 firefighters were involved in extinguishing a fire in an open space in the Kyiv region.

The statement said experts conducted an assessment and found that the radioactivity levels were within normal limits. The statement did not specify where the fire occurred, but a DSNS spokesman later confirmed to Ukrainska Pravda, a Ukrainian media outlet, that the fire was in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

“We hypothesized that the emissions could possibly come from forest fires in the region of Ukraine, which may have lifted radioactivity into the air,” Finland’s nuclear authority said, adding that the air currents were coming from the direction of Chernobyl.

Asked about the announcement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “There were no warnings from our own relevant agencies about elevated levels of isotopes in the atmosphere, there were no warnings about threats to human health, so I have no nothing to say in this case”.
