Cherif Mellal, the former president of JS Kabylie, has been on hunger strike for twelve days to protest the “considered arbitrary” conditions of his detention.

Detained since January 19, 2023 in El-Harrach prison, the former president of JS Kabylie, Cherif Mellal began an open hunger strike to protest the conditions considered arbitrary for his detention, local media tell us Morning Algeria.

Mellal is accused of “violating laws relating to international capital movements and money laundering”.

Still according to the newspaper, the human rights group demonstrated that the file was empty, in particular by presenting “evidence of the invalidity of a document used in the case, a fake document found on the internet”. As is often the case for prisoners of conscience in Algeria, the charges against the former president of JSK are considered unfounded by the collective.

The Indictment Chamber refused the request for provisional release, citing the need to continue the investigation by sending court cases abroad.

The Algiers court confirmed the continued detention of Cherif Mellal by rejecting the request for temporary release by his defense counsel. Although he was acquitted in a first case of “undermining national unity”, he remains in prison for another, with a decision to place him under arrest warrant.

Cherif Mellal was sentenced to 18 months in prison, a sentence upheld on appeal in January 2024, and he has been in custody since January 2023.

Meanwhile, his favorite club is now in the hands of a former minister in Bouteflika’s government, Ould Ali Lhadi, near Tebboune, who took the helm of JSK in close cooperation with Mobilis, the club’s main donor
