Cheng Lei was a former anchor of the English channel of China Global Television News Network (CGTN). She was detained by the Chinese authorities in August 2020 on charges of illegally providing state secrets overseas. She was released from China and returned to Australia in October 2023. She recently reminded on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) current affairs Q&A live program that if Australians choose to visit China, they should remain vigilant regarding China’s expanding national security laws.
