Record number of participants at the Chemistry Olympiad in Switzerland
Vienna (OTS) – With 348 participating schoolchildren from 89 nations, the International Chemistry Olympiad, which was held from July 16 to 25, 2023 in Zurich, Switzerland, set a new size record. The successes of the Austrian delegation are also impressive: Leonard Çalışkan from the Vienna Sir Karl Popper School won silver, Rahel Vecsernyés-Handl from BG/BRG Eisenstadt, Christopher Taschler from HTL1 in Klagenfurt and Valentin Mitterlehner from BRG Innsbruck won a bronze medal.
„Extensive specialist knowledge in chemistry is required to take part in the competition, which goes well beyond what is known in school
“, explains Hubert Culik, chairman of the Association of the Austrian Chemical Industry, who has supported both the Austrian Chemistry Olympiad and participation in the international one for many years. “Chemistry creates solutions for the current major challenges such as climate protection, renewable energies, electromobility and energy storage. For that we need dedicated talents like these Olympians
“, adds Culik and heartily congratulates the four successful Austrian participants.
“Being able to meet once more in person following four years of online competitions caused by the pandemic was a motivating experience for both participants and mentors,” says Georg Schellander, Federal Coordinator of the Austrian Chemistry Olympiad and “Head Mentor” of the Austrian IChO delegation, adding: “It is admirable and impressive what young people are capable of in the community with like-minded people”.
The four Austrian participants qualified last school year through the state Olympics and finally the Austrian Chemistry Olympics, which took place for the 49th time this year and aims to find and promote these talents in young people.
“To underline the importance of chemistry in Austria, we would be delighted if the International Chemistry Olympiad would take place in Austria once more following a 43-year break,” says Culik, full of hope and in unison with the other participating nations.
