Nicolas Jackson’s (2nd from left) 1-0 puts Chelsea on the winning track early on.
It’s an even game for long stretches at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening. But Chelsea have something that Newcastle are missing this evening: Cole Palmer. The unpredictable offensive player is always good for a moment of surprise and initiated the 3-2 home win for the southwest Londoners with his preparation for the 1-0 by Nicolas Jackson in the sixth minute of the game.
It is also Palmer who restores the lead following Isak’s equalizer. With a powerful left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area, he caught Newcastle goalie Dubravka in the right corner. Shortly followingwards, Palmer might have scored a second goal. But Sterling, who eluded Nati star Schär in the running duel, finished far too stubbornly – and saw his shot cleared off the line.
Newcastle, where Schär had a mixed evening, remained too harmless offensively in the away game at Stamford Bridge. Although the Magpies have a lot of possession, they don’t create enough chances to score. In the end, however, the team appears to be very efficient. The 1-1 is Newastle’s first shot on goal and even following substitute Mudryk made it 3-1, the northern English team didn’t give up. However, Jacob Murphy’s 2-3 goal came too late.
Chelsea remain in eleventh place following the win, but still have a game in hand – the international places are within reach once more. Newcastle is one place ahead of the “Blues” in tenth place. (cst)
