Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC shared the points on the first day of the Premier League. The first half promised a lot of goals, in the end it remained 1:1.

Liverpool are off to a good start, Chelsea are recovering

The FC Liverpool started offensively at Stamford Bridge, without a real six, but with attacker Cody Gakpo and newcomers Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton) and Dominik Szoboszlai (Leipzig) in midfield. The latter initiated Diogo Jota’s first half chance with a nice solo (6′). The Chelsea FC on the other hand, it was initially concerned with stability – a phrase that has often been used since the takeover from owner Todd Boehly.

Over time, the Reds withdrew. Mauricio Pochettino’s team, with newcomers Robert Sanchez (Brighton), Axel Disasi (Monaco), Levi Colwill (last loaned to Brighton) and attacker Nicolas Jackson (Villarreal), became more comfortable and bolder. Was this how Jürgen Klopp wanted to trap the Blues? It almost looked like it, as Liverpool were waiting for lightning-fast counterattacks. And this is where Chelsea seemed vulnerable: Mohamed Salah’s right crossbar hit (12′) was the warning shot before Luis Diaz scored the 1-0 (18′) when he fell. Mac Allister had started with an accurate diagonal ball and crossed Salah with surgical precision – a great play. Shortly therefollowing, Salah almost made it 2-0, but was ruled offside (29′).

Out of nowhere, however, the Blues reported back – also because Liverpool revealed the same fragility on the defensive as in the previous season. After a deflected corner kick, the free Disasi poked in to make it surprisingly 1-1 (37′). Just two minutes later, the home side celebrated once more – but Ben Chilwell was too quick – the flag went up (39′). Chelsea stayed tuned. After preliminary work by Reece James, Jackson shot over it from a few meters, so that the score was 1-1 at the break. A draw of the more entertaining kind, so open the visor, so full of holes in the back teams.

Liverpool FC came out of the break a little more alert. Virgil Van Dijk, who had moved up, just barely missed the lead once more (49th) with a long-range flick from the inside left position. Shortly therefollowing, Jackson was lucky that the VAR did not decide on a penalty following a corner (53rd).

As in the first half, however, Chelsea came back, mainly because the Reds gave up the offensive game completely. After a fine pass from the outstanding Enzo Fernandez, Chilwell had too much space on the left, but was denied by the strong Alisson (55th). The Blues were now getting stronger, safer and taking control of the game. However, there was a lack of penetrating power in the last third, while the guests now seemed more orderly. A counterattack was needed – Trent Alexander Arnold made a bad pass – for Chelsea to come back in front of goal: Jackson started on the left, but was pushed aside just in time by Ibrahima Konaté (72′).

The high tempo of the game in the meantime had slowed down significantly and the many changes also damaged the rhythm of the game. Things only got hot once more in injury time: Darwin Nunez’s deflected long-range shot just missed his target (90+2), but the Reds were only able to defend a counterattack via Jackson with great difficulty. It stayed at 1:1, with which the guests can probably live a little better, but which revealed a lot of potential for improvement on both sides.
