[바이오타임즈] Modern people are exposed to large amounts of heavy metals due to eating foods containing various heavy metals and inhaling polluted air such as fine dust and yellow dust. Heavy metals absorbed into the human body are not excreted and accumulate. In particular, when they accumulate in the walls of blood vessels, they cause damage to the inner walls of blood vessels and become entangled with cholesterol, causing hardening or narrowing of blood vessels. This is central arteriosclerosis.

Severe arteriosclerosis affects the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, the cerebral arteries and carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain, and other peripheral blood vessels. It is divided into ischemic heart disease, such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular disease, such as cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction. Cerebrovascular disease is one of the four major causes of death in Koreans.

Because vascular health is directly related to our lives, management is very important. Recently, chelation treatment, a detoxification treatment for vascular health, is being applied to many patients. Chelation treatment is a treatment in which fluid containing Ca-EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra acetic Acid) and vitamins and minerals is slowly injected into a vein in the patient’s arm over 1.5 to 3 hours.

Chelation, whose name comes from the Greek word ‘Chele’ meaning the claws of crabs or crayfish, removes harmful substances and wastes such as heavy metals in the blood by excreting them through urine. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2013, following receiving chelation treatment, the incidence of heart disease and stroke decreased by 18% and 23%. In particular, a 39% improvement was observed in patients with both cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Kim Soo-yeon, CEO of Gangnam Seran Clinic, a vascular disease and anti-aging clinic, said, “Chelation treatment, called blood vessel cleaning, is helpful for patients with hyperlipidemia and diabetes, and also helps with chronic fatigue caused by decreased immunity.”
