Cheikh Anta Diop University (Ucad) in Dakar will reopen its doors on Monday February 26. It had been closed since last June, following the tensions which accompanied the conviction of opponent Ousmane Sonko. Since then, classes have been held remotely.

The Ucad academic council met on Friday February 23, 2024. It decided to resume face-to-face courses. For Bara Ndiaye, dean of the faculty of medicine at Cheikh Anta Diop University, this announcement is good news, even if not all students will be able to be present from this Monday since the university residences remain closed for the moment.

« The resumption was decided by the academic council, following the presentation of information relating to security at the space level, by the rector of the universitydeclares Bara Ndiaye to RFI. According to the information he received from the authorities, in terms of security, we can seriously consider the resumption. Straight away, I can tell you that this is excellent news for the entire university community. »

« The Cheikh Anta Diop University has created more than 100,000 students and it has been closed for almost ten months, with certainly many consequences on a social and educational level in particular, a lot of risks of demotivation, abandonment, dropping out of from some students », Fears Bara Ndiaye. Medical students who cannot return will have distance learning courses, specifies the dean.
